The Breville Smart Grinder Pro is a high-end coffee grinder that is highly customizable. There are a bunch of features that make it one of our favorite high end grinders.
In short, it has 60 grind settings, grind time control, the ability to choose how many cups or shots to grind, and conical burrs that will make customizing your cup of joe a breeze.
We recommend it to anyone who is looking for a high-quality grinder and wants to have the ability to create a highly custom cup of coffee as well as experiment with the different grind settings and grind time to play with the overall taste of your coffee.
Conical Burr Grinder
Conical burrs minimize the heat produced from grinding coffee beans which will protect the essential oils in the coffee bean that are sensitive to heat. Conical burr grinders are also quiet and use less energy to grind and are built to last.
Ability to Choose What Your Beans Grind Into
The Breville Smart Grinder Pro gives you the ability to grind your fresh grounds directly into an airtight container, portafilter, gold-tone filter basket, or paper filter. Designed to make your life easier.
LCD Screen Display
It has an LCD screen display where you can easily select your grind settings, grind time, and the number of shots or cups you want to grind.
It also has pre-programmed settings so you can easily achieve the perfect grind regardless of how fine or coarse you want your beans.
60 Grind Settings
It has 60 grind settings so you can get the perfect grind for your perfect cup of joe. From anywhere to a coarse grind for French press to a super fine grind for espresso, it can do it all.
Dosing IQ Technology
It allows you to adjust and program the grind time in 0.2 second increments so you can customize and get the perfect dose every single time.
18-Ounce Coffee Bean Capacity
It’s able to hold 18 ounces of coffee beans in the bean hopper so you don’t have to keep refilling it as you grind. The bean hopper is also easy to lock into place as well as remove to clean and store it.
What we like
60 Grind Settings
It makes it extremely customizable and allows you to get the perfect grind. If you want to make your grind even more coarse or fine than the settings allow you, you can open up the machine and adjust the grinder to make it even more coarse or fine.
You have a lot of options in terms of grind which is something we highly enjoy in a coffee grinder.
Conical Burr Grinder
It’s quiet and reduces the amount of heat produced when grinding beans which protects the essential oils in the coffee beans.
We think that’s incredibly important if you’re serious about coffee and want to keep the integrity of your coffee beans.
Easy to Use LCD Screen
This customizable feature makes it easy to not waste any coffee beans as well as letting you grind exactly how much you want how you want. It’s very easy to use and very easy to select however many shots of espresso or cups of coffee you want to grind.
The Bottom Tray and Bean Hopper Are Easy to Detach
This makes cleaning simple and easy. Since this machine requires frequent cleanings to keep it running smooth and like new, we like that that task is made easy with how it’s designed.
It’s meant to be stored on your countertop, it’s not going to be a machine that’s easy to transport or take with you.
For this reason, it is compact and fits perfectly on most counters, it is 6″ x 8.5″ x 15.5″. But it also allows you to grind a lot of coffee beans in one sitting. You won’t have to keep refilling it if you are wanting to grind a big batch.
Areas to Improve
People complain about the impeller wearing out over time, which is the part that pushes the ground beans out of the machine. Breville currently does not offer a replacement part.
You might be able to find it online elsewhere, but it will definitely require some searching. Some people have mentioned they found someone who makes 3D printed versions of this part which works well as a replacement.
Depending on how much you use it, cleaning it is very important. If you want a machine that you want to use frequently and only clean every once in a while, this might not be the machine for you.
You will need to clean it often, like 1 or 2 times a week often at least, if you are using it every day, if you want to keep it running and functioning like new. If you don’t want to clean it that often but want to use it frequently, this might not be the grinder for you.
Customer service also seems to be lacking. There are a handful of complaints online that complain how hard it is to call customer service and that their customer service team doesn’t seem to be very knowledgeable on the product.
We did see customer service also has an email on the Breville website, which seems like it may be a more sufficient avenue for reaching their customer service team to have any issues resolved.
Who Is It Best Suited For?
The Breville Smart Grinder Pro is best suited for anyone who wants a high-end and high quality grinder that has numerous customizable options and wants to take their coffee to the next level.
It is not for people who just want to grind their coffee beans and don’t care about having 60 grind settings and other customizable features. You can definitely get a decent low-end coffee grinder that will get the job done.
However, if you are looking for something highly customizable or want to experiment in the way you grind your coffee and something that will last a long time, this is definitely a grinder for you.
There are hundreds of combinations you can create with the grind settings and grind time. As well as the option of choosing how many shots or cups of coffee you want to grind.
The Breville Smart Grinder Pro is definitely on the higher end of the coffee grinder market, but this one is also higher quality compared to the lower end grinders.
You can definitely get grinders that are much cheaper, however, they won’t be as good quality with as many customizable features.
If you are looking to step up your coffee game and want a grinder that is going to let you customize your grind settings from size to grind time, then this is the machine for you.
Compared to other high quality grinders the price is similar, however this grinder has a lot of value and a lot of great features for the price tag.
Coffee Belly recommends the Breville Smart Grinder Pro for anyone who is looking for a higher end grinder that has a lot of features to easily customize their cup of coffee.
We think the pros outweigh the cons and think it’s one of the best high-end grinders on the market for coffee junkies.
If you are looking to invest in a good quality coffee grinder, the Breville Smart Grinder Pro is a really great option you’ll likely happy you bought.
We hope you found our Breville Smart Grinder Pro Review helpful in deciding if this is the grinder for you.
Is Breville Smart Grinder Pro Good for Espresso?
Yes, it has 60 grind settings that range from very fine to coarse. If you don’t think your grind is fine enough for espresso, you can even remove the bean hopper and adjust the settings easily internally to an even finer grind.
The grinder also comes with two portafilter cradles that are 50 and 54 millimeters so you can easily grind the coffee beans directly into your portafilter.
How Do You Use a Breville Smart Grinder Pro?
First, place what you want the coffee beans in the bean hopper (the container that holds the beans on the top of the machine). Then you will want to place what you want the coffee grounds to go into the grinder.
Whether that is a container, gold-tone filter basket, paper filter, or a portafilter. If it’s a portafilter you will need to insert the portafilter cradle into the machine to hold the portafilter.
Then you will want to set your grind size, set the number of shots or cups, and click the start button to start grinding.
How Do You Clean Your Breville Smart Grinder Pro?
The best way to thoroughly clean your Breville Smart Grinder Pro is by running ¼ of a cup of white uncooked rice (do not use instant white rice) through the machine on the coarsest setting. This will push out anything that is caked on the burrs, such as oil build-up from coffee beans.
How often you need to do this depends on the quality of coffee beans you use and how oily they are. If they are low quality and very oily, you will obviously have more oil build-up quicker than you would with higher quality beans that are less oily.
For daily or almost daily cleaning, you will want to empty out the bean hopper and clean it by hand. You can run it on the top shelf of your dishwasher too but you risk it getting damaged from the heat in your dishwasher.
You will also want to remove the top burr and clean it with a grinder brush that it comes with. You will want to brush around on the inside of the machine to loosen up anything that might be stuck.
If you have a vacuum on hand you can suck up whatever you just loosen up. Then put it back together and you’re good to go.
If you need more guidance on how to clean it, if you pull out the bottom tray there is a little guide on how to best clean the grinder.
You will want to clean the Breville Smart Grinder Pro often depending on how frequently you use it. This is not a machine that you can use a ton, barely clean, and expect it to work like new. It requires care and maintenance if you want it to last a long time.
