What Is a French Press and Why You Need One

A French press is a device you use to make French press coffee. It features a glass carafe, a plunger, and a mesh filter. You pour in hot water and coffee grounds and after it steeps for a few minutes, you plunge the mesh filter to the bottom of the carafe pushing the coffee grounds with it.

This will result in having a fresh batch of ready to drink French press coffee. If you want to learn how to make French press coffee in detail, click here to read our brew guide!

You need a French press in your kitchen because it is a cheap and easy way to make coffee. This brewing method is also commonly used to make coffee that is low in acidity. If you are looking for an affordable and fun way to brew your coffee, definitely try using a French press!

The Different Types of French Presses

The two main types of French presses you can get are made out of stainless steel and glass.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel French presses usually can keep your coffee hotter for longer. We don’t recommend getting any French press made out of any other metal than stainless steel. If are looking for a more durable French press that can withstand and falls and is rust-resistant, we recommend going with one that has a stainless steel carafe.

Glass

Another type of French press is one made out of glass. Borosocilite glass to be specific. We do not recommend getting a French press made out of any other type of glass. Always go for brosoicilte. It is thick, high-quality, and heat-resistant. Other types of glass French presses are typically thin and easy to break.

Plastic

Some French presses come in plastic-type materials. We recommend never buying plastic. It can warp from the hot water you pour into it and overall will not last you very long. You don’t want to get a plastic French press if you don’t want to throw it away shortly after you get it.

Sizes

French presses come in a variety of sizes as well. You want to figure out how much coffee you plan to regularly make and get that size. If you are only making coffee for yourself and you don’t drink very much every day, we recommend opting for a smaller size. However, if you are making coffee for multiple people in your household, we recommend going with, you guessed it, a larger size.

Benefits Of Using a French Press

Compact Size

French presses are typically small in size. Especially compared to a typical drip coffee maker. Their size can be a major benefit for anyone who doesn’t have a lot of counter space or wants a coffee maker they can easily store or bring with them when the leave the house.

Affordable

French presses are usually quite affordable. Their price is a major benefit, so if you are looking for a cheap coffee maker that makes really good coffee, you need to try adding a French press to your coffee maker collection!

Delicious Cup of Coffee

Brewing coffee with a French press usually results in an amazing cup of coffee. This is typical because it steeps your coffee and the oils and flavor from your grounds get absorbed into the final product. In other brew methods, the oils and flavors are typically absorbed more by paper filters.

Lower Acidity

If you are someone who is sensitive to the acidity in coffee, you may want to try using a French press. Due to the brew style of steeping coarsely ground coffee, the finished result is low in acid. So, it is a great option for those sensitive to the acidity in coffee!

What To Look For In A Good French Press

Carafe Material

As previously mentioned, the carafe material is a huge factor in buying a quality French press. Take a moment to evaluate what you want out of your French press and what your style is. If you tend to drink your coffee throughout the morning, then you may want to go with a double-walled stainless steel carafe that is going to keep your coffee hot. If that doesn’t matter as much to you and you like to see how much coffee is in the carafe, you may want to opt for a glass carafe for example.

Filter System

Make sure the filter has at least one layer that is stainless steel mesh. The entire filter and plunger should be stainless steel to avoid any rusting or corrosion. We recommend anything with at least two-layers in the filter if you can. This is because the more layers you have, the less likely you are to get grounds in your coffee. We think 2-4 would be a sufficient amount.

Size

Again, when you are evaluating what you want out of your French press, think about how much coffee you are going to typically make with it. Do you have someone else at home that is also going to drink the coffee or is it just you? Do you usually only have 1 or 2 cups of coffee or 4-5? Answer these questions and that should help you easily decide on a size of French press you get!
